Walk to Mordor

I love J.R.R. Tolkien, just adore him, which is why I collect and read his work and pieces about him all of the time. The man was a walker, he loved to wander around the countryside and seep up the scenery. I'll have to find the amusing story of Tolkien and an unpleasant walking partner.

As someone without a license (it's on the list!) I do a good bit of walking. I enjoy it, even if my cadence is odd and I need lots of heel and arch support. And now that we live near a park with a lake loop I want to spend more time out there (lathered in sun screen, mind.) Plus my beloved beagle has gotten rather beefy so we need to slim her down (in a healthy way) and that goes for myself as well, certainly. My husband and I used to walk everywhere when we first started dating, all over the city, and I miss that. I'm bringing it back!

So, what better way than to Walk to Mordor? I suppose if I were really cool I would set out in September but I honestly can't keep up with a hobbit — 18 miles in one night? Nope. Not gonna happen. But 1779 miles in 1001 days, I can do that! If I broke it into a daily walk, it's 1.78 (rounded) miles per day. I generally average 3.5mph so it's less intimidating. Now, will I walk 2 miles a day every day? Probably not, summer is here and I flinch from the heat and light like Gollum. But there will be days I walk more than 2 and they will balance out the rest.

So this page is for me to track my progress. I suspect I will use a few different means but I want to have one place in which I can synthesize everything. The first milestone is to walk from Bag End to Rivendell at the 458 mile mark.
